THE MAN IN THE STOREFRONT OFFICE- WISDOM, INSIGHT, & TOM UNDINE
It was an evening in July of 2009. I embarked upon the storefront office, paralyzed by fear and grief. I didn't know what or who I would find there, but I knew that I needed help, though I had little hope that it could be found on Planet Earth.
I rang the doorbell at the store front and a man came and opened the door. He smiled a welcoming smile and extended his hand. He introduced himself as Tom.
I sized him up. Is this a person I could let inside my head? He was professionally attired. He was young and handsome with piercing blue eyes. He looked more like someone who modeled menswear in GQ than a tireless and patient guide who would take me on a journey to find my life.
I made assumptions about the limits of his ability to understand me and my pain, based on his youth. I was wrong! He understood people and was a quick study at getting to the essence of each of us in the group. He never held back his perspective. His perspective was always an extension of his understanding of each of us and what we valued.
YES, here we all were in group therapy for grief recovery, each of us having lost someone very close.
Our lives were shattered . Our personalities were altered by the effects of grief and loss. Each of us were emotionally volatile, not always recognizing how much of what were feeling was an acting out of our pain.
In one of the seats of the circle, in the big leather chair, he watched and listened and then he spoke.
And there was silence as he spoke the profound yet simple options that we individually possessed.
He acknowledges our pain and speaks to each of us in individual and specific terms.
He observes when one of us has lost our way and he leads us back to healing, feeling, and rebuilding ourselves.
He hears the counterproductive ways in which we sometimes react and he challenges us, often reminding us of our own core values.
He offers reassurance and empathy.
He doesn't avert conflict. He is a direct, concerned, succinct, no crap taking angel of mercy- exactly who I needed in my life at this difficult time.
I have learned many lessons from the pain of losing my beloved, cherished, soul mate, best friend, confidant, lover, consultant and husband of 36 years. But I don't think that I would have recognized the lessons, or my own strength, or my choices, or my need to feel my sadness in my own way....were it not for the man in the store front office.

Tom,
Because of our explorations I know the world a little bit better.

Tom helped me a lot. I was struggling with my first year of school. I was depressed and thought I was going to drop out. I'm finishing up my second year now and I feel good. I have meaningful friends and most importantly, I feel good about myself and that I can do well in COLLEGE.
Thanks!
Thanks!
